Start with the default calculator settings so all quantities are set at '0'. Choose the refrigerator that best describes your current one, and type '1' in the quantity box beside it. Then, choose the coorsponding size and type Energy Star refrigerator and type a '1' in the quantity box next to it. Click the 'calculate' button to view the annual and monthly cost of each.
A phantom load is any device that consumes electricity when turned off but still plugged into an outlet. The appliance calculator includes the phantom load of your appliances, and appliances listed that have phantom loads are marked with an asterisk(*).
To figure out your appliance's phantom load use, look through the list of all the appliances on this page. Enter the quantity of each appliance you have in your home, but list '0' in all corresponding hours/day that the appliance is on. When you have all your appliances accounted for, and the hours/day set to '0' click the 'calculate' button. Notice the annual energy use and cost for each appliance that has a phantom load.
